


An EMT-Basic provides basic emergency medical care and transportation to patients who access the EMS system. The EMT-Basic receives guidance from a certified paramedic as part of a medical response team. In non-emergency situations, the medical response team provides transportation to patients who require an ambulance because of a medical condition.

EMT Basic Work Activities:
- Control life-threatening situations
- Maintain an open airway and provide artificial ventilation
- Deliver semi-automated defibrillation
- Control severe bleeding
- Administer a limited number of medications
- Treat shock
- Stabilize non-life-threatening situations
- Dress and bandage wounds
- Splint injured extremities
- Deliver and care for infants
- Deal with the psychological stress of patients and family
- Use non-medical skills
- Drive the ambulance safely
- Maintain supplies and equipment in proper order
- Use good communication skills
- Keep legible and concise records
